    New Master Plan for Earthdance

    In 1987, the Earthdance founders purchased 195 acres of beautiful meadow and hills and a two bedroom farmhouse to begin an intentional community around dance, nature, and creative living. The 1829 farmhouse, once happy home to a miner and his extended family, was in sore need of repair.

    Weighing priorities, the Earthdance initiates began by building a sauna! They then renovated the house. Over the next several years they built the dance barn, the big yurt, little yurt, cabin and shed. As the live-in community expanded, they built a huge house on the hill, now called Nine Mountain. In the 1998, we began adding to the Main House: the second floor, the wrap-around sun porch, the new entry, and the large round "Umbrella" studio.

    Early this year the Earthdance Board initiated a Capital Improvement review and planning process designed to identify needs and set a long term Master Plan. The four key needs identified were:

    • additional and suitable accomodations for volunteers and staff
    • additional private accomodations for guests
    • new office space
    • modifications to the facilities to meet stringent new building code requirements for fire and safety

    Our new Master Plan, envisioned as a 3-5 year process, will include:

    • construction of a new two-story residence to accomodate guests and staff
    • modification of the second floor of the existing Main House to serve as offices and a meeting room
    • expansion of the kitchen and dining areas and replacement of several rooms downstairs with a large open lounge
    • replacement of existing stairways with several protected, newly situated ones
    • installation of a fire protective signaling system and emergency lights

    Needless to say, with a project of this magnitude significant amounts of funding will be needed to complete each phase. We are examining many different options including loans, grants, and increased facility use. In order to achieve our goal, we need the network of our Earthdance community to join together in raising funds support the new Master Plan. We look forward to sharing our ideas and needs with you and to receiving your connections, suggestions, energy, gifts and enthusiasm.

    Comings & Goings on the Earthdance Board

    In recent years Earthdance has continued to build and fortify the activities of its Board. Current long term members include Penny Schultz (President), Stephen Yoshen (Treasurer), Carolyn Shakti Sadeh (Clerk), Zevey Steinitz, and Andrew Gaines. Typically meeting every six weeks, the Board holds the mission of supporting Earthdance as a Workshop and Retreat Center and the community it serves. Current subcommittees include: Programming, Staffing, Finance, and Buildings & Grounds; proposed new committees are Diversity/Multiculturalism, Fundraising and Marketing. The Board is thrilled to announce its new members:

    Eric Huther

      Integrally connected with Earthdance for many years as a construction and Action Theater aficionado, Eric has become essential to the vision and health of the organization.  An engineer by training, Eric has been heading up this year's Building Code review and development of our new Master Plan.  Relocated to the area half a year ago, Eric brings experience and interest in creative organizational development where spiritual values influence workplace behaviors and goals.

    Maxine Guatier

      In late 2001 Max provided important and valuable feedback in the review and revision of Earthdance staffing. As a skilled organizational consultant, Max brings to the Board a well-grounded sense of process, practice, and how to get things done. A passionate contact improviser, a woman who dives deeply into whatever she commits to, we are very excited to have Max joining the Earthdance Board.

    Deborah Watrous

      Purchasing Nine Mountain five years ago -- the beautiful, huge house on the hill Earthdance built in the mid 90s -- Deborah has become an integral part of the Earthdance community. Regularly throughout the year we send people up to them for overflow housing, they send people down to us for studio space, and together we host large groups that neither could handle alone. The Earthdance board is grateful to receive Deborah's light, open, grounded and willing spirit.

    Lisa Thompson

      Lisa is currently director of A.P.E. Arts at Thornes Marketplace in Northampton, host to much of the improvisational performance taking place in the region. A trained modern dancer, yoga teacher, and mother of two, Lisa is new to the Earthdance experience. The Board enthusiastically welcomes her fresh perspective and links with the larger dance community.

    We would also like to express our deep gratitude to Jody Nishman and David Hurwith who recently left the Board. Since we reformed the Board in 1996, both Jody and David have actively supported Earthdance to clarify and stay true its mission of providing a gathering place that inspires the art and spirit of improvisation.

    Ask and Ye Shall Receive!

    At our Annual Meeting (July 3, 2003), we asked for assistance in several different areas. All of our requests were met! Thank you Pawn Nitichan, Deputy Director of City Year, and Gene Broadway for advance planning with our Capital Campaign. And thank you, John, Phil and Rick for assistance with the following projects!

      In 1996 the Earthdance website was established under the direction of Greg Lara. Now, under the tireless efforts of John Howland, our website is undergoing major renovations. This Fall the site will contain more complete and up-to-date information on living and working at Earthdance, our expanded schedule of events for the local community, details about the Capital Campaign, a virtual tour of our facilities, and much more! We intend the revised site to be kept dynamic with frequent additions of photographs, new and update information. If you haven't checked out our site in a while, its time to take another look!

    Database Project

      This summer we began an ambitious project of designing a new database under the guidance of Phil Mitchell and Rick Roberts, and the assistance of Megan Frazier. This new database will enable us to electronically store much of the information that we are currently tracking by hand, streamlining the office work, facilitating sharing of information between staff, and improving our record keeping.

    Update: The Western Mass Moving Arts Project

    This year of the Western Mass Moving Arts Project has been full of ideas and activity. I (Spirit Joseph) have been excited to continue the incredible energy that was created by Dan Bear Davis last year.

    The continued popularity of our Music & Movement Jams has been inspirational and I hope to find more ways to bring together musicians and dancers in improvisational spaces. Penny's Community Sings have once again blessed Earthdance with the power of song, community, and love. Eclectic Offerings, our monthly evening of open sharings has been a sweet and varied experience of intimate gatherings and powerful performances.

    In our second year of our expanded Performance Series, we have had the pleasure of hosting a wide assortment of individual and group teachers and students. We are grateful Ashfield, Chesterfield, Cummington, Goshen, and Plainfield, local councils of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, for their support.

    Certainly a high point of our performance series and of the WMMAP was our Summer Party when the Village Harmony Chorus, a group of twenty-plus teens led by Larry Cutler, performed at Earthdance. Filling the entire floor of our dance barn, the loft area, and even spilling out into the hallway to watch, the crowd was enchanted by those amazingly professional performers. Especially gratifying was experiencing the mixture of the people here to see the concert with the dancers here to dance after the concert at our Summer Dance Party. It was quite a beautiful weaving of people and cultures. Many of the Village Harmony teens also joined in the Dance Party for their first experience of contact improvisation.

    Feasting Around the World, inspired by Carolyn Shakti Sadeh, has blossomed as a beautiful new event at Earthdance. Each month a feast has been hosted by several individuals native to the country. We have explored the culture of a different country each month by feasting on delicious food, hearing the stories and history of the region, and often dancing away the latter part of the evening. Thus far we have visited Brazil, Sudan, Thailand & Cambodia, Peru and Nicaragua.

    Moving Arts Festival at Earthdance, Summer 2004

    WMMAP (The Western Mass Moving Arts Project) is giving birth to a new arts festival, to be held in July 30 to August 1, 2004. We are still in the early planning stages, but we envision three full days of classes, performances and activities, with several options to choose from during three daily class times. In contrast to our more concentrated workshops, this festival will offer a chance to taste and study many different art forms: contact improvisation, authentic movement, action theater, storytelling, improvisational cooking, and more! Come for the whole festival, or just for individual classes and events. Check the Earthdance website for more details as our plans evolve.

    Calling for Inspired Teachers, Creators!

    Earthdance now invites proposals from individuals interested in offering a workshop, class or special event as part of our program on an ongoing basis.

    We welcome workshops that align with our mission to inspire the art and spirit of improvisation, supporting and training people at all skills levels to find and develop expression in movement, theater and music.

    The Numbers: What Do They Mean?

    2003 has seen a large amount of growth at Earthdance in many ways. The increase in income can be attributed, in part, to an increased use of the facility for rentals.

    While attendance at workshops has dropped compared to last year, we remain committed to offering them as they are at the core of our vision. The brightest area on our revenue side has been donations and fund development at Earthdance. Thanks to a large donation of antique furniture, which eventually raised $38,000, plus several other sizeable donations, we have raised nearly $50,000 more than in 2002.

    Increased staffing and the purchase of a truck for plowing and grounds work, a new industrial lawnmower, and new computers have all served to increase our expenses as well.

    In the first 3 quarters of the year, compared to 2002, our budget has grown approximately 20%. This means we are experiencing increased revenues as well as increased expenses and looking for opportunities to create more sustainable, steady financial systems.

    Growing pains are inevitable and our financial situation will be greatly affected by the upcoming major construction and associated capital campaign. Below is our anticipated 2003 Income and Expenses, not including expenses earmarked toward Capital Improvements.

      We invite you to come live and work with us in the areas of programming, administration, cooking, housekeeping, maintenance and repair. In exchange for 25 hours of work each week, you will receive: room & board, ever changing weekly classes, use of the dance studios, complimentary participation in jams, and discounts on workshops.

    Staffing Principles by Samantha
    (how we live and work together...)

    I have had the amazing opportunity to be the Operations Manager here for the last 9 months. Much of my energy here is spent on coordinating the constantly evolving volunteer program. I was asked to write about how we, the residents and staff, manage to live in a household of incredibly talented and emotional people, dance with and connect with our larger community...and still take care of business.

    Taking care of business around Earthdance means running a much-loved and well-used retreat center. Phone calls and emails need to be answered, schedules designed and put out, toilets cleaned, meals cooked, welcomes warmly offered, firewood stacked, laundry done, bills paid, guests picked up in town, dishes put away, and floors mopped. And then it all has to be done again. And then again. All to say that living at Earthdance can mean doing a lot of work.

    Why do we do it? We do it, quite simply, because we love this place and the magic that can be found here.

    Often people come to volunteer here because they have come here for an event and have had a life changing experience. Even though Earthdance is an intense experience of service, we are in awe that it is a place where amazing things happen. We remember the posse of improvers, costumed in orange, dancing in the creek on a misty day. We remember the fifty-year old man, new to contact improv, crying at the closing circle of the jam. We remember seeing community come together again and again to create Eclectic Offerings of performance, late night joke telling sessions, to feed each other New Year's cake, and to offer support and affection just when you most needed it. It is these memories that make washing yet another dish, dumping another bucket of compost, washing another load of laundry and answering another phone call, worth doing.

    After determining the grander reasons of why we live and work at Earthdance, the question becomes, how do we do it? For the amount of work and activity that happens here we have a very small crew. There are 6 staff living here and 2 staff who live nearby. Though we are small, we are mighty! I think the most important thing that we do to maintain our sanity is that we make it a priority to connect with each other. We have weekly staff meetings. The staff and some of our neighbors take turns teaching each other classes in yoga, writing, Pilates, modern dance and whatever else someone has up their sleeve. We have a 'Family Dinner,' once a week. We try to be really kind to each other, offering a hand when it is needed.. We attempt to be honest when making commitments to each other.

    Having said that, we go easy on each other when something does fall through the cracks, understanding that there are more important things in this world than getting everything done. We remind each other that we came here to dance and grow and not just to work. Most of all we try to remember that living and working in community offers the opportunity to delve deeply into our hearts and grow into people that WORK HARD, PLAY HARD, AND LOVE BIG!

    New Programs Initiated This Year!

    Artist in Residence Program

    Sponsored Artist Program

      Earthdance has initiated a Sponsored Artist program designed to support local artists in the creation and presentation of new work. Sponsored Artists will receive eight hours of free studio space per week for four months. At the end of the four months, Earthdance will produce and advertise for a showing of the artists work. We accept two artists per time period. The next Sponsored Artist Program begins November 1st. Contact samantha@earthdance.net for more info and an application.
