Music and Dance Symposium
Sunday, March 1st
An exploration of the intersection of music, dance, and the art of improvisation. Please join us for the day.

We are excited to bring together several of the core musicians who play at Earthdance (Mike Vargas, Bob Weiner, Stephen Katz, John Hughes, John Sprague, Peter Jones) to help guide an investigation into many of the questions that surround how music and dance come together in the art of improvisation. We will be dancing, discussing, and experimenting with music throughout the day-long event. The whole day is a funnel of ideas that starts at 10am and culminates with our monthly music jam (held that Sunday evening). The jam will be a delicious brew of all that was collaborated on and discovered throughout the day.

10:00 – 12:15pm: Music Lab/Jam – led by Mike Vargas
Theme: Discontinuity: offering permeability and space. Collaborating in a group improvisation. We will post some ideas and an overview of the lab on the walls of the studio so that participants can trickle in and know the structure if they come late.

12:15-12:30pm: Opening Circle

12:30 – 2pm: Lunch

2-3:30pm: Panel Discussion with Musicians

Theme of the panel: How do we organize the jam tonight?

  • This question addresses the underlining questions that bring us all to this event.
  • What are we each looking for in the collaboration between music and dance?
  • Differing preferences and how consensus can be reached for maximum satisfaction at an event?
  • How do we the balance between consciousness/limitation and just letting things happen in improvisation?
  • How can this day serve as a model for structure?

4-6pm: Open Proposal from Musicians
This time slot serves as and open question that feeds all the input from the musicians. This time will be a space for new ideas as well as complementary trajectories that began in the morning and continued in the panel discussion.

6-7:30pm: Dinner
Over dinner the participating musicians will create a structure for the evening jam that brings together as much as possible everyone’s wishes as stated throughout the day. The musicians will come up with a proposal for the evening jam that will be presented at the beginning of the jam.

7:30 Evening Jam

Program Fee (includes full day plus lunch and dinner): $55
