The Technology of the Circle: Community Building and Dance Making
with Onye Ozuzu

May 6 (Thursday evening) – May 9 (Sunday afternoon)

This workshop explores the circle as a structure for performed improvisation. The Africanist circle of traditional village politics, of Brazilian Capoeria, of Jazz music, of B-boying/B-girling, will emerge as a foundational and fluid tool for the crafting of layered, powerful individual and communal performance. Using contemporary dance movement, singing, writing, storytelling, and drawing, we will work toward a group performance of improvised sophistication.

Onye Ozuzu is a performing artist, choreographer, educator and researcher. Her body of work fuses modern dance, West African dance, Japanese and Chinese martial arts, yoga, improvisational performance, literature, and cultural studies. She has been actively making and performing work since 1997, which has been seen nationally and internationally at The Joyce Soho (Manhattan, NY), Kaay Fecc Festival Des Tous les Danses (Dakar, Senegal), La Festival del Caribe (Santiago, Cuba), Lisner Auditorium (Washington DC), among others.
